The next six days will be busy ones for the Fayetteville City Council.

Between tonight's workshop and Monday's regular meeting, the council plans to convene this weekend at Callaway Gardens for its annual retreat, beginning Friday afternoon and ending Sunday morning.

Topics on the regular council agenda include revisiting a sign ordinance variance request by Original Mattress Factory on Ga. highways 85 and 314. The request was tabled at last week's meeting.

A public hearing is scheduled to consider a request for a beer and wine license from El Parian restaurant at 365 Fayette Place.

Two proposed ordinances will have second readings a revision of the city's zoning map, and an amendment to the city charter regarding the election code.

Friday afternoon's retreat schedule begins with a session on retail/commercial redevelopment strategy and a discussion of the city's open space program. Other topics expected for Friday include a storm water utility update and a rundown on major road construction projects.

Wastewater sludge disposal is the first item on Saturday morning's agenda, followed by a discussion of the technology master plan. A Main Street/Downtown Development Authority update is expected just before lunch.

Saturday afternoon's activities begin with a review of the city's alcohol ordinance and any possible changes, along with consideration of the liquor-by-the-drink ordinance that must be passed in the next two months after last week's vote in the citywide election.

After an update on legal issues currently facing the city, discussion of police staffing and service as well as a possible new police station will be undertaken.

City Manager Joe Morton will brief the council Sunday morning on the city's goals and objectives before adjournment.

A number of miscellaneous issues could be covered at any of these times and some changes to this outline agenda could be made before the retreat.
