Antioch Baptist building on 171-year history

The Antioch Baptist Church has several distinctions; it is the second oldest church in the Flint River Baptist Association, it is one of the five oldest churches in Fayette County and it has all of its original minutes.

Constituted in March, 1829, it began with 19 members, many of whom are buried in the cemetery beside the church.

A year ago, members cleared an area to the east of the cemetery uncovering well over a hundred gravesites, many of which did not have a gravestone. Cedar crosses were made by hand and placed at those sites not otherwise marked.

Mission-minded, one of its members traveled to the Dominican Republic to help build a church and several youth traveled west to minister to Native Americans.

The AWANA program receives a lot of attention and is held each Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. The organization is for kindergarten through high school.

The youth recently held a car wash to obtain funds to refurbish their youth meeting room at the church and the adults held a bazaar to raise funds to refurbish the outside of the church building.

The children's choir exemplifies its ministry by singing in nursing homes and the members who are homebound.

Enjoy good home cooking? Each Wednesday evening soup and cornbread are served at 6:15 p.m. and then Bible study is held at 7 p.m.

Worship service is at 10:45 a.m. with Sunday School at 10 a.m. You might want to get there at 9:30 a.m., however, as that's the time fresh sausage and biscuits are served.

The congregation is currently served by visiting ministers and is searching for a full-time minister.
