No takers yet for WASA board seat
By JOHN
MUNFORD So far, no one has applied for a vacant position on Peachtree City's Water and Sewerage Authority. The city has responded by extending the deadline for applications until Friday, Nov. 17, in the hopes that some candidates will step forward to serve. Applications for the position are available at City Hall. The city council will choose one person to serve on WASA for a five-year term that begins Jan. 1. Council has plenty of people to choose from for other vacancies which were announced at the same time as the WASA vacancy, though. Ten people applied for a seat on the Airport Authority and three applied for a seat on the Recreation Commission, according to public information specialist Betsy Tyler. WASA sets the policy and direction for the city's sewer system, said General Manager Larry Turner. That includes making budgetary and construction-related decisions, he added. But the day to day operations of the sewer system are Turner's responsibility. "Even though they (WASA members) are appointed by city council, they make decisions based on what is best for the authority," Turner said. WASA's budget hovers around $5 million per year, Turner added. The authority meets monthly on the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and the meetings generally don't last longer than two hours, Turner said. In a statement, Mayor Bob Lenox said the city depends on volunteers to serve on WASA and other boards and authorities. "These volunteers provide a tremendous contribution to the community by overseeing the system and making decisions regarding the system in a public venue," Lenox said. "Citizens with a knowledge of business and financial operations would certainly be qualified. Comprehensive experience in sewer system operation is certainly not a requirement for appointment." WASA is about to take an expansion project to increase the amount of sewage it can handle. The project must be approved by state For more information regarding the application process, contact Gloria Reid at 770-487-7657.
