Hunting stands found in wooded areas of PT

Two deer stands were discovered in different wooded areas of Peachtree City last week by local residents.

Such discoveries used to be more common when the city was more heavily wooded years ago, said Capt. Stan Pye of the Peachtree City Police Department. It appeared that the recently discovered stands weren't used recently, and both were dismantled by the public works department, Pye added.

"We don't see them near as much as we used to," Pye said. "But with the size of the greenbelts in Peachtree City, you expect to see one or two every year."

Hunting of any kind is illegal in the city, Pye noted. DNR Ranger Chad Swain said that makes sense for safety reasons in a heavily-populated area like Peachtree City. For example, children could be injured by fire from a gun or bow while innocently wandering in a wooded area that's being hunted, Swain said.

Typically, when a deer stand is found in the city, the DNR is called in to determine if hunting has occurred there recently, Pye said. In some cases, the ranger might decide to leave the stand up for a few days to see if the hunter returns, Pye added.
