Wood, Hunter re-elected to commission posts

When the Coweta County Commission convenes in January, it will look very similar to this year's board.

Nearly 64 percent of Coweta's voters turned out Tuesday and sent Commission Chairman Vernon "Mutt" Hunter and Robert Wood back to the commission.

Officials in the Probate Court office had expected 50 percent to turn out and were quite happy to see the big turnout. The turnout in Sharpsburg was so heavy that residents were still voting at 9 p.m.

"I'm extremely happy to be representing the first district for another four years," Hunter said.

Hunter captured 3,621 votes to challenger Marvin McKoy's 3,307 votes.

The commission chairman ran especially strong in Senoia, where Mayor Joan Trammell endorsed McKoy because of the contentious relationship between her and Hunter.

Hunter also said other forces outside the district were also opposing him, which made him even more determined to win the race.

He also made it quite clear that he will be running all the affairs in his district. Commissioner-elect Leigh Schlumper, who defeated Commissioner Charlie Jones in July, has talked about holding meetings throughout the county.

"She won't be holding any meetings in my district," Hunter said.

He thanked the voters, especially in Senoia, and said he plans to represent them as well in this term as he has in the past.

In Commission District 5, incumbent Robert Wood defeated Tom Touchstone by a count of 1,457 to 1,086.

Wood also cited outside influences in his race and said he was happy to win again.

In the Senoia City Council race, Pam Youngblood and Darren Ratajski will take office in January. Youngblood led all candidates with 362 votes, while Ratajski received 333. Sonny Duke received 185 votes, while former councilman Ken Gordon pulled 180 votes.

East Coweta voters also sent Rep. John Yates back to the General Assembly. Yates received 9.247 votes to challenger Lee Howell's 4,231.
