Civitans aid Sams School
By CAROLYN
CARY
The Fayette County Civitan Club presented a check for $7,118 to Lana Carr, executive director of the Joseph Sams School in Fayetteville. The amount represented $3,618 from the Fayette Civitans and $3,500 from the Georgia District North Civitans. Carr thanked the local group for being the first community club in the county to support the school, which began in 1984. She said that she was a special education teacher at Booth Middle School and was Joseph Sams' last teacher before his death. He was the son of Dr. Jim and Marie Sams, Fayetteville. Carr became interested in working with the school and now serves as its executive director. She conducted a slide presentation of the various children and their activities at the school, to the tune of "Because You Love Me." "It will take $500,000," she said, "to pay off the existing loan" on the new building the school moved into last fall. Thoughts are being given to finishing the basement for more space and to adding a modified challenge course in the rear. A capital campaign will be underway shortly. Special computers have been acquired and those students who do not have dexterity in their fingers to type can control it by placing their hands on the screen. "Our next goal," Carr added, "is to begin taking babies at 18 months. It is important to begin training those with physical disabilities as soon as possible."
