Youths deserve respect, says local Optimist Club

Most young people stay out of trouble and many do a lot of good, and they deserve more positive reinforcement.

That's the philosophy behind Optimist International's annual observation of Youth Appreciation Week, says W.B. Perry, head of the project for the Fayetteville Optimist Club.

The club will observe Youth Appreciation Week Nov. 12-16, and has received the help of the Fayette County Commission through a formal proclamation.

"We want to be among those who encourage youth and recognize the good that they do, and not be among those who criticize," Perry told those present during the commission meeting last week.

The club supports such causes as the Battered Women's Shelter and maintains a food bank for indigent Fayette residents. Optimists also plan and carry out annual essay and oratorical contests for local students.

In addition, the club honors outstanding law enforcement officers and firefighters each year.

The club meets at Melear's Barbecue on South Glynn Street on first, third and fifth Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.
