Council tables sign request
A sign variance request for the Original Mattress Factory was tabled Monday by the Fayetteville City Council as the store's management continues to work with city staff to find a workable solution. The store has applied for an additional wall sign on the rear of the building facing Ga. Highway 314. The building has customer entrances there and on the side facing Ga. Highway 85. The sign in question, which would measure approximately 33 square feet, was denied by staff because it is in violation of the city's sign ordinance, which permits a business in a planned center to have a single wall sign. According to city staff, the store's existing sign exceeds the current allowable size for signage, which is 5 percent of the total wall footage. The city's sign ordinance was recently revised after several months of discussion and study. The additional sign would exceed the limits of both the previous and existing sign ordinances, staff reported. A corporate representative of Original Mattress Factory was present at Monday night's council meeting and said that the store needs the additional signage on the Hwy. 314 side, and that management is willing to make concessions and even reduce the size of the existing sign if necessary to get approval for the new one. Council agreed that postponing the issue until the next meeting could give both parties enough time to come to a resolution. Monroe Roark
