Profiles of Senior Volunteers in Fayette

Greg Dunn

Greg Dunn is probably best known locally for his political activities. However, while some might argue that being a "full-time" part time county commissioner might be considered a volunteer effort, he is also active in the civic and charitable volunteer arena.

Currently, much of Dunn's time is being taken up in helping to elect George W. Bush. He is co-chairing both the Fayette County George W. Bush for President campaign and the 3rd District campaign. Through his efforts Fayette County has received and distributed almost three times the allotted number of signs and campaign paraphernalia.

He is currently receiving from 10 to 20 phone calls a day regarding the Bush campaign. Phone banking, which will touch close to 5,000 voters, is underway with the help of numerous volunteers. The Bush committee expects to contact all of the newly registered voters as well as many repeat voters in Fayette County.

Dunn has been active with the local Fayette County American Heart Association. He has walked in the Heart Walk for three years and has headed a local team of walkers for two years.

Last year he, along with others in Fayette County, met their fund raising goals, winning a cruise and luggage. He has served on the board for three years and has supported fund-raising efforts ranging from the popular Celebrity Celebration to the Heart of Gold Golf Tournament to the Health Fair held by Team Jonathan.

A veteran of Vietnam and the Gulf War, he is a member of the Fayetteville American Legion, Post 105. He is currently serving his third year as Sergeant at Arms for the group. The American Legion supports many local charities and hosts an annual awards banquet for law enforcement, fire and emergency personnel in the county.

Dunn jumped in fully to support the efforts of Fayette Senior Services to build a new senior center. Andy Carden noted, "Greg Dunn has gone the extra miles from his position on the Commission for seniors. He has very presence in obtaining the 3 acres of land. Without him, it would not have been a reality. Further, he has been in the forefront of several discussion with Jim Mallot and assisting us several technical questions."

Prior to moving, he served on the Board of Directors of the neighborhood association at Whitewater Creek and was in charge of security for the area.

He served on the steering committee to elect Bob Dole in Georgia and continues to volunteer his time with the Coverdell Leadership Institute.

Prior to running for County Commission, he was a Precinct Chair and Vice Chair for the Fayette County Republican Party.

Volunteering is not a new activity for Dunn. He served on the Mayor's Ad Hoc Committee for the revitalization of Tennessee while living there, served on the School Board in Kentucky for three years and one year on the School Board in Kansas. He was responsible for organizing the Special Olympics one year and assisted in the efforts another year. He has worked to support the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes and continues to support these and other local charities through donations.
