Wednesday, November 1, 2000 Profiles of Senior Volunteers in Fayette Fred Brown and Iola Snow Fred Brown and Iola Snow recently teamed up to help Elaine Galliard with Ashley Glen Assisted Living in Peachtree City and Floy Farr with the first Annual Southside Memory Walk. The walk was a benefit for the Alzheimer's Association held recently in Peachtree City. Brown and Snow did such an outstanding job that they have been asked, and have agreed, to chair the Fayette County walk in 2001. Brown's name may be better known to those who have recently moved into the county as an amphitheater than a person. However, to those who are active in the community or who have a history in the county, Frederick Brown Jr., the person, is known as a past Peachtree City mayor, a true gentleman, a friend and a strong and positive community supporter. He served on the Peachtree City Council for three years, was mayor of the city for ten years, served on the Board of Health for 13 years and has lived in the county for 27 years. In 1991 the amphitheater was named in his honor. Brown was a charter member of the Fayette County American Heart Association, serving for 12 years on the Board. He has been a member of the Peachtree City Kiwanis for 21 years, serving as Treasurer, Vice President and President. He served on the Amphitheater committee for six years and was in charge of most aspects of the popular Old McIntosh Opry. Although Iola has only lived in Peachtree City for three years, she has carved out a niche in volunteerism. A retired benefit administrator for Big Star, she was concerned about what she would do when she retired after working for 40 years. She says not being able to say "no" took care of that concern. In fact, Snow jokes that when she worked, she cleaned her own house and did her own yard. Now that she is "retired," she has found it necessary to have someone help out in both areas due to her community involvement. She is Chair of the Greeting Committee at First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City, is active with the Women of the Church and serves on the Staff Committee that oversees hiring and other staffing concerns for the church. She is also the Wedding Coordinator for the church, something she enjoys tremendously. Snow also serves on the Hospitality Committee for her neighborhood. Prior to retiring she worked with the March of Dimes for ten years and helped out on the Team Walk committee. Having a strong background in organizing, and wanting to give back to the community, she was a perfect compliment to the committee that organized the first Alzheimer's Memory Walk. Next year Snow and Brown will be working hard to improve on the success of this year's Memory Walk.
