Library patrons celebrate its founding

Library enthusiasts recently celebrated the third annual Founders' Day and Concert Series at the Fayette County Public Library, Fayetteville.

Five residents of Fayetteville pooled their resources in 1929 and began the town's first library. They were the late Lynne Payne Beadles, Lucille Alladio Busey, Mattie Lena Blalock Ingram, Louise Culpepper Murphy and Lucy Reagan Redwine.

The women sold handmade aprons, jams and jellies and anything else they could think of to raise funds for their very own building.

Helped along by author Margaret Mitchell, who admired their spunk, a building was finally constructed in 1948 and is currently occupied by the Fayette County Historical Society.

The current library is at 1821 Heritage Way, next to the Fayette County Administrative Center.

Among those offering musical selections were Kay Pace, Alisa Kirk, Angela Lyles, Pat Warrington, Cynthia Beard, and dancers John Q. Mabry Sr., Ruby Heard, Ken Brown, Miss. Dee and Mr. Cee.

Library director Christine Snell introduced the entertainers and Fayette County historian Carolyn Cary. Cary gave a personal reminiscence of the founders.

Nearly 100 persons attended the event.
