F'ville liquor, 3 local races on 2 ballots By DAVE HAMRICK
Fayette County voters go to the polls Tuesday to elect a county commissioner, a Board of Education member, a clerk of Superior Court, a state senator and a U.S. congressman, in addition to statewide races. The crowded ballot also includes a $65 million bond issue for school construction and numerous state constitutional amendment questions. Fayetteville residents will be asked to make a second trip to a separate polling place, the city's historic Depot, to decide whether liquor by the drink will be legalized in the city. Local candidates' answers to questions put to them by The Citizen are included in a special Campaign 2000 section starting on Page 2C in today's issues. Also included will be brief explanations of each constitutional amendment, provided by the secretary of state's office, biographical information on each candidate, and a sample ballot that voters can mark and take with them to the polling place to speed up the process. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. If you don't know where your polling place is, phone the county Elections Department at 770-460-5730, extension 5408. Information also is available on the department's web page, at admin.co.fayette.ga.us/election/electres.htm . The secretary of state's office also provides election information on-line at www.sos.state.ga.us/. Information on constitutional amendments and referendum questions also is available at the secretary of state's information hot line, 888-265-1115. Officials are cautioning voters to expect long lines at polling places and suggest marking sample ballots ahead of time. Some predictions of voter turnout run as high as 80 percent.
