Hospital names three board members
The Fayette Community Hospital Board of Directors recently held its first meeting of the new fiscal year, welcoming three newly appointed members Hulett D. Sumlin, Joel Cowan Sr., and William T. Cook, M.D. Sumlin also serves on the board of Piedmont Hospital Foundation. He retired from his position of 26 years as president and CEO of Piedmont Hospital in 1991. During his tenure with Piedmont, he was largely responsible for moving the Hospital from Capitol Avenue to its present site and increasing patient beds from 250 to 500. Sumlin served as president for both the Brookwood Rotary Club and the Georgia Hospital Association, and he served on the board of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Atlanta. A graduate of the University of Georgia, Sumlin earned his bachelor's degree in pharmacy and later received his certificate in Hospital Administration from Georgia State College. Sumlin and his wife reside in Atlanta and are active members in the community. Cowan currently serves as chairman of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) and will serve as part of the Governor's Development Council. A visionary in the creation of large-scale, master-planned communities, Cowan is responsible for the development of Peachtree City, Phipps Plaza, Snapfinger Woods and Palmetto Dunes in Hilton Head, S.C. A resident of Peachtree City, Cowan served as mayor in 1959 and continued as chief executive of the city's development company through 1976. As a leader in the business world, Cowan is involved in entrepreneurial efforts worldwide, as well as civic activities on the local level. Dr. Cook served as the president of the Medical Staff at Fayette Community Hospital since its inception until June of this year. Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Cook formed the Piedmont Women's Health Group of Peachtree City and holds staff privileges at Fayette Community Hospital and Piedmont Hospital. Dr. Cook lives in Peachtree City with his wife and two children and has dedicated much of his time to the development and growth of Fayette Community Hospital. "These members are valuable additions to our Board," said Darrell Cutts, FCH CEO. "Their collective knowledge and expertise in business and healthcare is certain to complement and enhance our efforts to strengthen the Hospital and our mission to provide quality patient care." The nine-member board meets regularly to review the hospital's policies, practices and goals, as well as strategic plans with the chief executive officer and the Medical Staff Executive Committee. The board also steers the allocation of resources and support systems to meet the hospital's goals. Board members serve terms ranging from one to three years, in order to ensure that the board has a mix of experienced and new members. Other members include Mark P. Pentecost, Jr., M.D., Chairman; Robert B. Allison, Allison-Smith Company; W. Ronald Duffy, Peachtree National Bank; Helen F. Sams, M.D., Fayette Medical Clinic; H. Dale Richardson, M.D., Richardson and Goodman Neurosurgical Associates; and William M. Scaljon, M.D., Piedmont Urology.
