Commission turns down radio tower zoning

The Board of Commissioners turned down a rezoning request by Spectra Site Broadcasting Group to place a 1,154-foot radio tower on property west of Roscoe Road between Creekview subdivision and Pine Hill Street.

Spectra Site has requested that the zoning be changed from RR (rural reserve) to RR-SUP (rural reserve-special use permit).

The property involved is in the commission's 3rd District and the commissioner for that district, Lawrence Nelms, made the motion to deny the rezoning based on the following reasons:

F The district is too small.

F The tower location is not set back appropriately from residential structures or district boundaries.

F The proposed tower exceeds 150 feet in height.

F The proposed use is a commercial activity and is prohibited from using Reese Way, a residential street under the specifications of The Coweta County subdivision ordinances.

F The applicant has not provided evidence to demonstrate that the tower on Witcher Road cannot accommodate the proposed services.

F The applicant failed to provide satisfactory evidence that it had determined that the proposed site was the most feasible of all sites investigated.

F The applicant failed to demonstrate that existing towers do not have sufficient structural strength to support applicant's proposed antenna and related equipment.

F The applicant failed to show that the costs of adapting an existing tower for sharing are unreasonable.

In other actions, the Board of Commissioners were updated during their last meeting on two intersections along the heavily traveled Ga. Highway 34 east corridor.

The state Department of Transportation has informed the county that a permit has been approved for traffic light installation at Andrew Bailey Road and Hwy. 34. The DOT has not provided a time table for installation of the traffic signal. The addition of turn lanes will be included in the intersection improvements.

The opening of a new section of Sullivan Road is expected to take place by the end of this year. The intersection of Sullivan Road with Hwy. 34 is being moved to improve traffic flow and safety. The new intersection brings Sullivan Road and Baker Road into one intersection. The new portion of Sullivan Road cannot be opened, however, until the installation of a traffic signal is completed.

Work continues on that intersection at this time.
