Political convention slated for Jackson The Southern Party of Georgia and The Georgia Party have announced plans to merge into a single, unified political body to represent the interests of Georgians and native Southerners living in Georgia. The merger will take place in a joint state convention of the two parties, at the Plantation Lodge in Jackson Saturday, Oct. 28, at 10 a.m. Items on the agenda include the decision of a name for the unified party, ratification of a joint constitution, and election of party officers for the year 2001. Southern parties have been formed in at least 16 states over the past year. By merging, the two parties in Georgia will become the largest state Southern party. Both parties were formed in early 1999 by members of the Southern Party Exploratory Committee, and immediately achieved success at the ballot box. James Derwood Tootle, the mayor of Bellville, Ga., is a member of The Georgia Party. Spalding County school board member Glen Goodson is a member of the Southern Party of Georgia. According to its web site (http://www.spofga.org), the platform of the Southern Party of Georgia includes "the right of the sovereign State of Georgia to control its own affairs within the bounds expressed in the U.S. Constitution, without federal interference," and "the right of independence and self-determination for the People of Georgia by all honorable means." The Georgia Party is "dedicated to preserving the unique culture of the State of Georgia by defending its heritage and reclaiming its sovereignty," according to its web site (http://www.southernparties.net/users/Georgia ). Cost of registration for the convention is $10 for party members and the general public, and may be paid at the door or by pre-registering with the Southern Party of Georgia at 1575 Old Alabama Road, Suite 207, Roswell, Ga. 30076.
