ARC accepting nominations for Development awards

In an effort to showcase and reward innovative and sustainable development, the Atlanta Regional Commission is accepting nominations for its second annual Developments of Excellence Awards.

For many years ARC has reviewed Developments of Regional Impact in the Atlanta Region to determine their potential positive or negative effects. In awarding the annual Developments of Excellence, ARC intends to showcase large-scale, innovative developments that are setting the standard for how we might develop more efficiently as a region.

Last year's awards went to Riverside by Post, a neo-traditional, mixed-use community nestled on the Chattahoochee River in the City of Atlanta; and Ridenour, a live-work-walk town park community currently under construction in Cobb County. An interdisciplinary jury made up of members of the Georgia Planning Association, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, The Georgia Conservancy, the American Institute of Architects and representatives of both the commercial and residential development communities, among others, will make the award selections.

To be considered for the 2000 awards, a development must have been reviewed by ARC as a Development of Regional Impact and found in the best interest of the state, must have at least initiated construction, and will be judged on how well it advances ARC's Regional Development Plan policies and development practices.

Nomination forms are available from ARC and the deadline for accepting nominations is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1.
