PTC council approves jail impact fees

The Peachtree City Council has agreed to collect an impact fee on all new construction projects to help fund a new jail facility for Fayette County.

At its meeting Thursday night, council passed the impact fee proposal unanimously. City Attorney Rick Lindsey said the latest proposal from the county addressed all his concerns on the city's behalf.

"Everything I wanted in there was put in," Lindsey said.

The county's original impact fee proposal drew much ire from Mayor Bob Lenox, who felt it unfairly targeted the city's industries to share an unfair portion of the burden.

The funds will be used to defray the cost of the jail in the hopes of paying off the debt sooner, county officials have said.

The jail impact fee for each household will be $869.78 while the fees for retail trade structures will depend on their size: $4,744.23 for those under 10,000 square feet, $9,488.46 for those between 10,000 and 50,000 square feet, and $14,232.69 for those over 50,000 square feet.
