Fairburn stands to get nearly $60,000 in community development block grant funds for 2001.

City Administrator Tony Cox said the city will use the money to replace water lines around the Old Campbell County Courthouse.

"Primarily the reson for the replacement of the lines is that they are aging and they were in a target area delineated as low to modertate income and this is where the CDBG funding comes into play. The project is approximately 80 percent complete and should be finished by the end of the month," said Charles Ackridge, Fairburn assistant city administrator.

Other South Fulton communities will use the money for similar purposes. Palmetto will get $60,000 to spend on sewer improvements, while Union City plans to use its $98,000 for street improvements.

The funds are part of the $4 million that Fulton County annually receives in federal dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The funds are used to provide improvements and services that benefit all Fulton County citizens, with the primary intention being to improve the living conditions for low and moderate income families.

Residents living in the communities can view the plans at all city halls.

Other South Fulton projects include:

Improvements at the Hugh Conley Recreation Center in College park, valued at $248,800.

$73,000 worth of improvements at four city parks in Hapeville.

Construction of a $225,000 pedestrian bridge in East Point.

$90,000 worth of single family housing rehabilitation in East Point.
