Most candidates AWOL on chamber questionnaire

By JOHN THOMPSON

With less than two weeks to go before a political forum, the South Fulton Chamber of Commerce is looking for answers from county commission candidates.

Nov. 7, South Fulton residents will vote on a new commissioner for District 7. Former Commissioner Michael Hightower resigned earlier this year amid charges of corruption in awarding county contracts.

After he resigned, 13 candidates jumped into the race. The chamber is looking to give residents a comprehensive overview of the candidates' positions on issues, but has found the going touch.

Chamber President Kermit Hairston sent out a questionnaire to all the candidates and asked them to submit answers back to the chamber. As of his deadline last Friday, only four candidates had responded.

"I've personally called them, but that's all we have received," he said.

The forum is set for 8 a.m. Oct. 31 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Interstate 85 and Virginia Avenue in East Point. The forum is sponsored by Shannon Mall and is free and open to the public.

As a public service, the South Fulton Citizen will offer readers a copy of the candidates responses from now until the election. The first two are printed today.
