Relax and savor the coffee

Nothing jump starts the morning or winds down a leisurely dinner better than a steaming cup of coffee.

Fayetteville offers a variety of places to savor a fresh cup o' joe or a continental style cappuccino or latte.

Two cozy spots on the south side of town include the City Cafe and the Fisher-Lee Coffee House. Known for its delicious breads, pastries and cakes, City Cafe offers coffees brewed with beans from Seattle's Best. A nice selection of frothy cappuccinos and espressos are available from morning until evening.

Enjoying a coffee and pastry in the European atmosphere of the cafe or alfresco on the patio is a perfect way to start or end the day. City Cafe is on South Glynn Street, directly across from City Hall, and offers a full lunch and dinner menu, currently featuring German specialties during Oktoberfest.

The Fisher-Lee Coffee House provides a comfortable home away from home for java lovers who seek a quiet spot to sip and read or get together with friends for food and conversation. Open for breakfast and lunch during the week and for coffee and occasional entertainment Friday or Saturday evenings, Fisher-Lee offers gourmet coffees, teas and a modest selection of muffins, bagels and sweets.

Board games like mancala and checkers provide a quiet diversion for children as well as adults who drop in for a casual lunch or light breakfast.

Carol Sheppard, who owns and operates the coffee emporium with her daughter, Melanie Burton, is a true coffee aficionado who likes to experiment with different brews and try top-of-the line beans from around the world. "We select our coffees for quality," she said.

The family business occupies a house which has been an antique and bric-a-brac shop and the home of a piano teacher. Sheppard said many former piano students have dropped by and pointed out the location of the instrument they remember with a mixture of nostalgia and dread.

Finally, Starbucks provides two convenient locations for its loyal legion of fans craving hot and cold coffee confections. Book lovers can pick up a latte grande while browsing the aisles at Barnes and Noble or take a break from shopping at Fayette Pavilion and drop into the main store near the entrance to the shopping center. A variety of sweets coffee accessories and beans also are available at Starbucks.
