Airport could house Cessna facility

Newnan-Coweta Airport may soon have something that no other regional airport in Atlanta has.

Henry Bucci of Atlanta Southeast Aviation Tuesday told the Coweta County Commission, convened as the county Airport Authority, that his company wants to build a Cessna maintenance facility at the airport. (The commission has taken over the functions of the authority recently because of problems with the authority's audit.)

"This would be one of only eight in the country and the only one within 600 miles," he said.

The facility would help the county's employment and bring many people to the region who haven't seen the county before, he said.

The company wants a 30-year lease agreement with the county and also wants to continue its status as the fixed base operator at the airport.

"I don't think we're ready to talk about that yet," said County Commission Chairman Vernon "Mutt" Hunter.

Hunter also asked Bucci about possible noise and congestion his facility would bring to the airport.

"There will not be any 747s in there, but there will be small jets," he said.

Airport director Scott Fuller said County Attorney Mitch Powell was reviewing the contract between the airport and Atlanta Southeast and would bring a recommendation to the next meeting.
