Redwine sisters
remember their years at Fayette High
By CAROLYN CARY Sisters Elizabeth Redwine Ramsey and Henrietta Redwine Dennis are among Fayette County natives celebrating the 75th anniversary of Fayette County High School. Elizabeth, "Boo", 89, proudly said that her graduating class of 1929 was the first graduating class to wear caps and gowns. "I was rather disappointed, though," she said, "as I had my heart set on a pretty new white dress." There were 32 in her graduating class and fewer than a dozen of them had started first grade with her. The school was a two-story frame building that now houses Fayetteville City Hall. There were no yearbooks or class trips. Her principal was Clayton Peacock and the superintendent of schools was L. M. Lester. Her favorite teachers were a Mr. Roberts, who taught Latin, and Bessie Lee Prather, who taught history. Her sister, Henrietta, "Retta", 82, graduated in the class of 1936. She started high school in the two-story brick building, now City Hall, but attended the last three years in a two-story brick building that is now the Board of Education building. The school faced east. She remembers about 40 or so students graduating with her. She served as the valedictorian of her class. Favorite teachers she remembers are sisters Margaret Rucker, who taught civics, and Julie Rucker, who taught French. Both ladies remember two things there was a pot belly stove in each room with which to keep warm, and that the "senior year" was just through the 11th grade.
