Tradition lives in Fairburn this weekend

Old Campbell County Festival always a winner

By JOHN THOMPSON
When the calendar page flips to October, South Fulton residents know a good time is just around the corner in Fairburn.

Nearly 5,000 visitors and residents will descend on the streets of historic Fairburn today (Saturday, Oct. 7) for the annual Old Campbell County Homecoming.

Louise Tallman helps organize the festival and said the city will be alive with activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The parade starts at 10 and is one of the highlights of the festival.

"We'
ll have everything from floats to business groups participating. We're known for throwing a lot of candy to the kids," she said.

One year, members on a bank float threw pennies to the crowd and had both adults and children scrambling for the goodies, she said.

Other activities include:
An open house at the courthouse from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A 5K and 10K road race at 8 a.m.
Entertainment from noon to 4 p.m. Tallman said this year's entertainment includes cloggers, singers and a bluegrass band.
An art show from noon to 4 p.m. upstairs in the courthouse.
Arts, crafts, food and concessions offered all day.

Tallman urges anybody who wants to get a feel for Fairburn to make a pilgrimage to the town today.
