Fairburn: Developers are now on their own

By JOHN THOMPSON

Homes and new subdivisions under construction around Fairburn seem to indicate that growth is finally coming to this quiet hamlet in south Fulton County.

At last week's City Council meeting, City Administrator Tony Cox confirmed the growth when he asked the council to eliminate some of the development incentives.

Cox told the council the incentives had worked extremely well and now is the time to revoke the ordinance providing the extras for developers to come to Fairburn.
The incentive resolution was passed by the council in 1998 and offered several different options for developers.

Some of the incentives available for the smaller developments included:
Allowing the city of Fairburn to participate in placement of water and wastewater systems. The city would provide labor, materials of both, up to 1 percent of the value of the development.
Allowing the city to install water distribution mains and service laterals.
Allowing the city to install sewer collection mains.

For large developments with more than 250 homes, the city discounted building permits 95 percent
