The Peachtree City Fire and Rescue Department will celebrate Fire Prevention Week Saturday, Oct. 14 with its annual open house at Station 82 at 105 North Peachtree Parkway from noon to 5 p.m.

The fire prevention message will be spread to youths by the puppet show, the department's fire clowns and Freddy the Fire Truck, so there will be plenty to do for young children. Light refreshments will also be served.

New to the open house this year is a free Child ID card for younger children that will include each youngster's photo. The ID cards, like everything else at the open house, will be free of charge.

The department's EMS and firefighting equipment will be on display in addition to special displays on the hazardous materials (hazmat) and dive teams.

Lt. Gary North said the puppet show and Freddy the Fire Truck, the department's new fire safety robot, are designed to help the department make contact with all children ages 3-9 in Peachtree City.

"The older ones we teach in more detail, like how to establish exit drills in the home and how fire affects your body, such as by breathing in poisonous gases," North said.

The department also offers tours of the station to student and scout groups. The Scouts are also taught first aid skills by the department.

Department representatives also have fire safety messages for both adult civic groups and elderly and handicapped people as well.

The program for elderly and handicapped residents deals with cooking safety tips, how to avoid burns and using medical alert systems, North said.
