SST moving to Peachtree
City
By DAVE HAMRICK Another new industry will soon move into Peachtree City's industrial park. The Fayette County Development Authority Wednesday authorized issuance of $6.5 million in bonds to finance land and building for a manufacturing plant for SST Industries Inc. SST is a manufacturer of plastic drums and barrels out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Construction already has begun on the company's 80,000-sq. ft. plant on 20 acres at the corner of Ga. Highway 74 and Gardner Park, across from Gardner Denver company. Plans for the plant represent an expansion for the company, said Tate Godfrey of the Peachtree City Development Authority. Initial employment will be around 25, he said, with plans for future expansion. Only two workers will transfer from Cincinnati. The rest will be hired in the area. The low number of employees appealed to local development boosters, said Godfrey. "Not having a huge labor force need was a plus, since we have such low unemployment," he said. "It's a good project," he said, adding that the company's blow-molded plastic containers are used for a variety of purposes like gas cans and fertilizer containers. The authority acts as a conduit for financing but does not incur any liability for repayment of the loan. Authority members also approved an inducement letter as a first step toward a $12 million bond for a new Peachtree City headquarters for World Airways Inc. The company has about 200 employees with median salaries in the $50's. Fifty workers will be transferred to the new headquarters, with 150 new hires. A company headquarters with high wages is exactly the sort of industry the Development Authority is targeting, members said. "We're dealing with a very first-class organization," said authority member Brian Edwards.
