New commercial center set for east Coweta By JOHN
THOMPSON
Eastern Coweta County is getting more retail and commercial space. During the last Coweta County Commission meeting, commissioners unanimously approved a 3.84-acre commercial zoning called the Hilltop Centre. The property is just north of Senoia on Ga. Highway 85 and consists of 14,100 square feet of office and retail space. Davis Enterprises, who is developing the site, will replace a vacant gas station with a new convenience store. The property also will have two commercial buildings and one office building. The county's planner recommended reducing the site to 1.12 acres and denoting it as a C-2 Neighborhood Business district. County planner Robert Tolleson said commercial land use is not shown on the future land use map for the property and the development could encourage sprawl. Tolleson added that developing the whole tract would not encourage compact development of commercial uses or development of retail and office uses at intersections where neighborhood commercial development is recommended. A smaller development would discourage sprawl and enable the developer to use his property and improve an existing commercial use, he added. But commission Chairman Vernon "Mutt" Hunter disagreed with the planner and asked the commission to approve the entire tract for commercial. Hunter said he didn't believe in breaking the tract up and the commissioners agreed.
