One inmate died
naturally; other is subject of probe
By JOHN MUNFORD The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has cleared the Fayette County Jail of any wrongdoing in the death of an inmate back in August. Pruitt McKinley, 45, of Cartersville, died Aug. 9 at the jail of natural causes, said Garry Moore, the assistant special agent in charge of the GBI's Greenville office. The autopsy revealed that McKinley died of complications due to emphysema, Moore said. Meanwhile, the GBI has completed its investigation of another inmate who died after an altercation with jail personnel. James E. Eppinger died Aug. 27, and the results of the GBI investigation have been forwarded to the district attorney's office for review, Moore said. The results of Eppinger's autopsy couldn't be released since the case is still under investigation, Moore added. According to original reports, Eppinger was being moved from the regular jail population to another area when he became combative with jail personnel. He was injured during the confrontation and taken to Fayette Community Hospital, where he later died. In both cases, Fayette County Sheriff Randall Johnson notified the GBI and asked for the agency to perform the investigation.
