Traffic snarled
by accident, power lines
By JOHN MUNFORD A tractor-trailer carrying a modular home unit pulled down power and utility lines Wednesday afternoon, snarling rush-hour traffic on Ga. Highway 54 near the intersection of Ga. Hwy. 85. The downed power, telephone and cable lines crossed four lanes of traffic, said Lt. Beverly Trainor of the Fayetteville Police Department. The lines were caught by the top of the trailer as the truck neared Sharon Drive around 3:15 p.m., she said. Fayetteville police were assisted by Fayette County sheriff's deputies in routing rush-hour traffic around the location as Hwy. 54 was blocked off from Sharon Drive to Gingercake Road, Trainor added. The area remained blocked off well into the night, beyond 10 p.m., Trainor said. The lengthy delay was because each utility company had to work separately to perform the repairs, with Georgia Power going first. No injuries were reported, Trainor said. The county marshal's office also assisted with the Fayetteville fire department and the city's public works department. It was not clear at press time whether charges had been filed against the truck's driver.
