The first thing you smell when you enter The Gourmet's Delight Deli just before the midday lunch rush is the aroma of sizzling bacon, freshly cooked and ready for a BLT.

Rare is the restaurant, in this age of franchised food chains, where you can enjoy potato salad, chicken salad, banana pudding and rich chocolaty brownies wrapped individually in cling wrap, and know the items were made fresh on the premises.

But the women of Gourmet's Delight have been preparing their special recipes and sandwiches for 20 years.

"This is our 20th anniversary year," said Linda Wallace, who along with Wanda Moon and Dora Williams have kept Fayette County's lunchtime crowd stated.

The trio opened their first restaurant in Peachtree City in conjunction with Brandon's Package Store. Soon after, they launched the deli in Fayetteville at 340 North Glynn St., diagonally across from Carolyn Ford. Eventually, the entrepreneurs consolidated all their efforts at the Fayetteville location and closed the shop at Brandon's. Since then, their business has blossomed.

By Wallace's estimates, about 25 percent of their business is catering. The bulk of their trade comes from locals who have become regulars at the bustling deli.
Customers are often greeted by name as they enter the establishment, which is fronted by a counter where one of the owners/chefs/bakers is ready to take your order. Some of their longtime clientele even have sandwiches and salads named after them. There are several low fat specials such as Phil Jackson's Turkey Special and Realtor Patti Ellis' Chef Salad.

Friday is the day regulars line up for banana pudding. Prepared from a recipe conjured up by Moon's mother, this Southern dessert staple is comfort food in a styrofoam cup.

The Deli uses all Boar's Head brand meats and freshly baked breads. The menu includes a variety of subs, such as the Gourmet's Italian sub with ham, hard salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar on a sub roll and Linda's special, a similar sandwich served hot with a creamy Italian dressing and spices on a crusty roll.

There are grilled sandwiches, veggie melts, classic deli sandwiches like pastrami and roast beef and salads galore.

Of course, the crisp dill pickle slices are complimentary with all sandwiches. Homemade soup time is coming up in October with a special flavor each day of the week.

The Gourmet's Delight Deli is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for dining in or takeout. No credit cards accepted, only cash or checks. For catering information or special orders phone 770-461-3003.
