Airport gets federal grant

The county's airport got at least a $450,000 shot in the arm Tuesday.

Newnan-Coweta Airport Director Scott Fuller told the County Commission, who also acts as the Airport Authority, that the airport had received a federal grant.

The grant is through the new federal Airport Improvement Program and provides up to $150,000 a year for three years to airports around the country.

The grant funds 90 percent of available projects and allows airports to use it on a yearly basis, or save it all for one big project.

Projects eligible for the funds include runway, taxiway and apron pavement maintenance, along with land purchases and easements.

Fuller recommended the Airport Authority use the funds to improve the apron on the west side of the airport and for future land acquisition.

In the last few months, the county has developed a master plan for the airport and has been inundated with requests for people who want maintenance facilities or other structures at the airport.

"We've been so swamped we now have to evaluate the requests to determine which fits better with our plan," said Commissioner Lawrence Nelms.

Fuller is confident the airport might receive more grant money in the future.
