City opposes county retail center rezoning

Peachtree City officials are taking a stance against a rezoning of property adjacent to the city that would clear the path for a the proposed 80-acre multi-use development.

In a letter to the Fayette County Planning and Zoning Department, Peachtree City's director of developmental services argues several points why the proposed Plantation Centre at Starr's Mill on Ga. Highway 74 South shouldn't be permitted.

Jim Williams pointed out that Plantation Centre would be located nearby a shopping center that is already under construction inside the city limits Wilshire Pavilion, which will contain a Publix grocery store.

The proposed Plantation Centre would be almost twice the size of Wilshire Pavilion, Williams noted in the letter. He also mentioned that Plantation Centre "would essentially be a highway-oriented cen
ter" compared to Wilshire Pavilion, which is designed to serve the southern portion of Peachtree City.

Plantation Centre, which would be across from the Starr's Mill school complex, would also not be connected to sewer lines, Williams said in the letter.

Starr's Mill LLC of Macon has submitted the concept plan to the Fayette County Planning and Zoning Department. It includes components for retail stores, office space, a church and several soccer fields.

The retail and office space element of the concept plan is located in the front area of the property near the highway. The office and commercial areas would encompass 188,000 square feet, including a 55,000-square-foot building earmarked for a grocery store.

Bordering the commercial area in the rear would be the church site on one side and the soccer fields on the other. The nine soccer fields, including one championship size field, would be located on the portion of land adjacent to Meade Recreation Field.

The company is requesting that the land be rezoned to community commercial from its current status of agricultural/residential.
