Sharpshooters get a history lesson

Sharpsburg Sharpshooters Sons of Confederate Veterans, Camp #1729, listened to one of its own, Ronny North, at a recent meeting.

North spoke of the Arnolds, Baileys, Parks, and Norths who came to Coweta County shortly after its formation in the mid 1820's. Their names are still associated with roads and houses in the Newnan area.

He said that many of the families came from Virginia and South Carolina and were eligible to draw land because they were Revolutionary War veterans.

Camp Commander Eddie Lanham outlined the current status of placing gravestones for veterans of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War and the Spanish-American War throughout a five-county area. Over 700 have been placed to date. He asks that anyone who knows of a gravesite that contains a veteran of one of these wars should contact him at 770-719-8583.

One guest, Thomas Lee, said that he had refurbished the old John Bailey house on Poplar Road and was able to learn more about the area from the county natives.

The group meets each second Monday at the Sharpsburg Baptist Church.
