A $2.5 million multipurpose
center forms the center piece of the Peachtree City Recreation Department's
master plan for future facilities.
Randy Gaddo, director of leisure services, presented the plan, which also
includes an additional $6.7 million in other projects, to the city Planning
Commission recently.
The multipurpose center could be at the recreation complex, said Gaddo.
Items included in the wish list may or may not come to fruition later,
depending on the city's needs, the commission was told.
For 2001, the department plans to expand the Gathering Place by 1,500
square feet. Other projects planned for the coming years include expansion
of the Kedron rink, which is expected to be under construction soon.
The participation numbers in the city's youth basketball program have
stagnated because of the lack of places to play, though soccer is still
seeing growth, Gaddo said.
The soccer upswing has taken its toll on the number of youngsters enrolled
in girls softball and little league baseball, he added.
A private fund-raiser is underway to build a special needs playground,
with more than $30,000 raised so far, Gaddo said.
"None of that money will be funds from the city," he said. "It
will all be volunteer."
Two regular playgrounds are slated for 2002, though the locations aren't
yet known, he added.
