A local man who died in a head-on collision Monday morning on Ga. Highway
85 south was attempting to pass another vehicle in heavy fog, according
to police.
Michael Justin Cornelison, 21, of Fayetteville, died on the scene, said
Lt. Bryan Woodie of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. Cornelison was
attempting to pass another vehicle when his Mustang hit a Dodge Ram pickup
head-on.
This wreck is the fourth traffic fatality recorded in Fayette County this
year.
The driver and two passengers in the truck, all from Warm Springs, were
taken to Southern Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, Woodie
said. One of the passengers was a 6-year-old boy who wasn't buckled in
properly, Woodie said.
"It occurred during a period of extremely heavy fog," said Woodie,
who judged that visibility was less than 150 feet as soon as two minutes
after the crash.
The thick fog also prevented the victims from being flown to a hospital,
Woodie said.
The youth, William J. Huff, was later flown to Children's Healthcare of
Atlanta at Egleston, where he was in fair condition Tuesday morning. The
other passenger, Billy Huff, 36, was in fair condition Tuesday morning.
The driver of the truck, Howard T. Jackson, 26, was released from the
hospital Tuesday, Woodie said.
The wreck, which occurred on Hwy. 85 south near Royal Ridge Way, is still
under investigation, Woodie noted. There is no indication that drugs or
alcohol are involved, he said, although blood tests were routinely taken
from both drivers and submitted for analysis.
The vehicles were towed to Fayette Wrecking, where they were examined
by police as part of the investigation Monday.
The crash separated the truck from another truck it was pulling on a trailer,
Woodie said.
