United Way campaign underway, seeks $250,000

The 2000 United Way Campaign co-chairmen, J. Tate Godfrey of Pathway Communities and C. Michelle Griffin of SunTrust, have announced the kickoff of the fall efforts to raise $250,000 for the coming year.

In a joint effort with the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, a breakfast kickoff was conducted with more than 100 persons attending.

Speaker for the occasion was Dr. Timothy S. Mescon, dean of the Tony and Jack Dinos Chair of Entrepreneurial Management at Kennesaw State University. He has served as a volunteer with United Way both for Cobb County and for the state of Georgia.

He praised both Fayette organizations for sharing the responsibilities of the campaign, relating the success of the Cobb United Way and Cobb Chamber uniting in the same way.

Mescon related the point of view of his grandfather, who immigrated to the United States at the age of 14. His grandfather had heard that the streets of America were paved with gold and felt it was an opportunity for success. He was barely off the boat when it became apparent that the streets not only were not paved with gold, they were not paved at all.

He determined that he would probably be the one to have to pave them.
“So it is with us,” Mescon said. “We see people and situations that need our help, and United Way is the way in which we can help.”

Also serving on the United Way in Fayette County are Andy Carden of Fayette Senior Services, Nick DiLeo of Sealed Air, Mike Jablonski of Wachovia and Richard A. Rodriquez of Regions Bank.
