Constitution
Week begins Sept. 17
The Augustin Clayton chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution
(DAR) invites area communities to celebrate U.S. Constitution Week Sept.
17-23.
Citizens are asked to join with Daughters nationwide by participating
in the Bells Across America project.
At exactly 4 p.m. Sept. 17, the date and time the U.S. Constitution was
signed, citizens across the country will step outside their homes and
ring a bell in celebration.
The Constitution of the United States of America secures our liberties
and sustains our freedoms, said Barbara Davenport, public relations
chairperson for the DARs Augustin Clayton chapter.
The purpose of the observance and celebration of Constitution Week
are to emphasize the responsibility of safeguarding and defending the
Constitution, and preserving it for posterity; to understand the Constitution
is our great heritage and the foundation of lives and culture; and to
study the historical events which occurred during Sept. 1787.
Members of Congress received a DAR resolution, and following passage of
a resolution by both Houses of Congress on Aug. 2, 1956, President Eisenhower
proclaimed Sept. 17-23 Constitution Week. The success of the first observance
prompted the President to sign into Public Law 915, the resolution designating
Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week.
The Augustin Clayton chapter asks that citizens stand united in their
quest to educate the children of this nation by our example and ring a
bell.
