Courthouse tree limb bashes cars

A tree fell last Friday and a number of people heard it.

A huge oak limb fell from a tree on the Old Courthouse lawn and landed atop several cars. They belonged to employees of McRae Communications, on the south side of the Courthouse Square.

The vehicles are owned by Tak Yan Chan, Karon E. Westmoreland and Stephen P. Jones. Some cars received minor damage; others required body work and new windows.

In a joint effort Fayette Wrecker lifted the limb enough for Georgia Power to repair a guy wire, and Georgia Power and the Fayette County Building and Grounds Department cut up and removed the limbs and debris.

An employee of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, housed in the courthouse, was standing nearby. Said Clara Klusty, “It sounded like a piece of cloth ripping. I have never heard that sound before.”

The Building and Grounds Department has passed along the incident to the county’s insurance department.
