McIntosh High School students succeeded in setting a new county average
for overall SAT scores, climbing a full nine points in 1999-2000 to reach
1,102.
This is the first time that the Fayette County School System has
had a school have an average total score over 1,100, said Larry
Reeves, director of pupil services for the county.
McIntosh registered a nine-point increase in the math area, bringing its
average to 560 in the math section, and 542 in the verbal section. The
state average posted a total score of 974, with the national combined
average being 1,019.
Were very pleased with the results, and we are proud of our
students, said school Superintendent Dr. John DeCotis. Weve
got the teachers, students and parents all moving in the same direction,
added Stuart Bennett, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
The teachers know what expectations to set, and students are receiving
encouragement at home as well.
In addition to the college preparatory scores at McIntosh increasing,
Bennett noted that the scores for technical school preparatory students
jumped 20 points as well.
Fayette County High School also increased its total score by nine points
to 1,017, increasing in both verbal (507) and math (510).
School administrators were pleased with Starrs Mill High Schools
premier results, which totalled 1,055. Sandy Creek High School experienced
a 12-point drop from the previous year, which DeCotis said is not an unusual
occurrence. There are years when some (scores) go up and others
drop. The important thing is that the system average continues to
increase, DeCotis said.
A summary of the last six years indicates a steady increase in the system-wide
scores climbing from 1,029 in 1994-1995 to the current average of 1,046.
The state average also increased from 960 in 1994-95 to its current 974.
The national average has climbed nine points from 1,010 in 1994-95 to
1,019 today.
