Lower Fayetteville Road to get improvements

Residents worrying about traffic on Lower Fayetteville Road may soon have their prayers answered.

County Administrator Theron Gay confirmed that the county is looking into a deal with the city of Newnan to share the $2.4 million cost to improve the road from Greison Trail to Mary Freeman Road.

As Ga. Highway 34 has become more congested, more and more commuters are using Lower Fayetteville as an alternate route to get between Newnan and Peachtree City.

Gay said the county and city will share equally in the cost of the improvements, since the road meanders back and forth between county property and city property.

If the deal is worked out, Gay said the county will seek DOT funds to help pay for the improvements that will include two feet of widening, straightening of curves and bridgework.

Although the road is getting busier, there are no plans to widen it to four lanes yet, he added.

Newnan officials are also looking at plans to place an “alternative transportation path” alongside the road. Gay said if the path is built, citizens could use bicycles or carts as an other transportation option.
