News Briefs

Fayetteville city officials have now gotten a firsthand look at the site of the proposed Deer Pointe development that is the subject of a pending annexation and rezoning request.

Developer Bob Rolader has petitioned the city to allow 873 acres on the south side of Ga. Highway 54 west of Fayetteville to be annexed for his 454-home residential development, and he has offered to donate 215 acres at the rear of the property for permanent open space, along with two large lakes at the site for a future water source.

Rolader escorted city officials to the site Thursday afternoon. The group inspected the base of a large dam that separates the two lakes to consider the concerns of some local residents that it might not be strong enough to serve as a regular residential street. The portion of road that crosses the dam is currently unpaved.
Rolader’s development plan is still before the Planning and Zoning Commission, and is likely to be tabled at Tuesday night’s meeting. Public hearings are set for Monday night’s City Council meetings, but the matter will be tabled there because it is still before P&Z.|

Funding for new schools will be the main topic as the Fayette County Board of Education meets Monday at 7 p.m. at the school board offices in Fayetteville. A recommendation to place a bond or special local option sales tax referendum for school construction on the Nov. 7 ballot will be presented to the board by the Facilities Action Committee.
