Sign regulations being studied

Outdoor displays of products and materials might soon be regulated in Peachtree City.

The Peachtree City Planning Commission has approved an amendment to the city’s sign ordinance that would place strict limitations on commercial businesses wanting to display or store products outside. The amendment won’t become official until it is approved by City Council.

The amended ordinance would forbid such displays unless they aren’t visible from a public street. Even then, a display must be in a space that is no more than 100 feet long and up to six feet from the wall of the store building. Such a display cannot infringe on a sidewalk or encroach into a zoning setback area, the proposed ordinance would require.

But products can be displayed outdoors if they are in an approved, permanent, fully enclosed space, the ordinance states.

The new ordinance also allows stores to get temporary use permits that would allow outdoor displays larger than six feet by 100 feet. The permits would last up to seven consecutive days, but only four would be given to one zoning lot per year.

Additionally, the permits must be approved by the Fayette County Health Department, the police chief, the city engineer, the building official and the city planner, the ordinance requires.
Those approvals would insure the display would not pose a health or safety hazard, the ordinance states.
