Though “a little bit disappointed” with the low voter turnout, Fayette County Commission candidate A.G. VanLandingham said this week he is pleased and humbled after winning the Republican nomination in Tuesday’s runoff.

Fayetteville businesswoman Elizabeth Barnes, who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination, will face VanLandingham in the final round of balloting or the seat, the General Election Nov. 7.

Only 11.2 percent of local Republican voters showed up at the polls Tuesday, giving VanLandingham2,642 votes (52.88 percent) to Carl Davis’ 2,354.

“Anytime anyone wins, they need to be satisfied,” said VanLandingham. “We are and we’re grateful. It’s a little bit humbling to have confidence like this placed in you.”
But, he admitted to being “disappointed that [the turnout] wasn’t better than that.”

He praised Davis and Frank Oakley, the third candidate in the July 18 General Primary, for running a clean campaign. “It was a very clean and orderly race. Everyone maintained their integrity. I think they showed some class,” he said of his opponents.
