Luau a big hit with
Heritage Club Take a group
of fun-loving seniors, add a little music, a
beautiful lagoon pool and bit of bright summer
sun and pretty soon everyone will be putting on
grass skirts to learn to hula.
Well, maybe. While
some opted to watch, many of the group who
attended a recent luau at Gold's Gym did don
grass skirts and learn the traditional dance.
When the ladies
finished with their lessons they
goaded the men to outdo them. To ensure the
gentlemen got in the right spirit, grass skirts
and sarongs were required for each.
Unfortunately, even
with the skirts it was unanimously decided that
they didn't have the grace and skill displayed by
their teacher, Nancy Price.
Michelle Norman and
Nicole Taylor and Price, all from Regions Bank,
first demonstrated the hula to the group
attending the luau, then gave lessons to those
brave enough to give it a try. Price learned the
hula while living in Hawaii in her youth.
Gold's Gym hosted
the luau for Regions Bank Heritage Club members,
their guests and participants in the Gym's aqua
classes. Those attending were treated to a
Hawaiian-themed array of food, beverages and
music. The lagoon pool was festively decorated
with items loaned by a club member who had lived
in Hawaii.
All of the
attendees were given leis and had the option of
wearing a sarong or grass skirt. Prizes were
given to those participating in the hula lessons,
as well as to those answering a variety of
health-related trivia questions.
In addition to
enjoying the beautiful pool during the luau, all
of those attending were invited to enjoy the pool
for the day in addition to being given guest
memberships.
Gold's Gym has two
pools, an indoor junior Olympic pool, and the
outdoor pool designed for mental
health per owner J.D. Holmes. Various
arthritis and low-impact aerobic classes are held
in the indoor pool throughout the week.
