Runoff next Tuesday to decide 4 races

Republican voters will be asked to return to the polls next week to finalize four party nominations not decided in the General Primary July 18.

Runoffs will be on the ballot Tuesday, Aug. 8, for County Commission Post 1, Board of Education posts 2 and 3, and some of Fayette's voters will participate in a runoff for state Senate District 28. Results will be on The Daily Citizen Online at http://www.thecitizennews.com.

Voters who chose a Democrat ballot in the primary will not be eligible to vote Tuesday; those who chose a Republican ballot or voted only in nonpartisan races, and those who did not vote will be eligible. State election officials are predicting that voter turnout may dip into the single-digit percentages.

The party nomination for the Senate seat will be the final chance to vote in that race, because no Democrats have qualified to run for that post. The Republican candidate chosen Tuesday for Commission Post 1 will face Elizabeth Jane Barnes, who ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination in the primary, in the Nov. 7 General Election.

Facing off for County Commission Tuesday will be A.G. VanLandingham and Carl Davis.

Incumbent state Sen. Rick Price will face Mitch Seabaugh Tuesday. The 28th District includes parts of Fayette and Spalding counties and all of Coweta.

For Board of Education Post 2, political newcomers Kimberly Gatlin and Terri Smith will face off; for Post 3, incumbent board member Connie Hale will vie with former board member Marion Key, with the winner facing Democrat Bill Bryan in November.

Candidate interviews were carried in the July 26 edition of The Citizen, and questionnaires were in previous editions. In today's edition, The Citizen has offered candidates 250 words to woo Fayette voters in any way they see fit. Those essays are on pages 10A and 11A.
