State to resurface 29 streets here

The Georgia Department of Transportation recently approved state funding to resurface 19 streets in Peachtree City, eight in Fayetteville, two in Tyrone and ten county roads in Fayette.

Funding is provided through the DOT's Local Assistance Road Program, initiated in 1978 to help local governments maintain paved roads.

Each year, all Georgia cities and counties submit priority lists of roads and streets that need to be resurfaced. DOT reviews each road and street submitted and develops a needs assessment and cost estimate. Based on the money available in LARP each year, a final list of roads is compiled and approved by the commissioner for funding.

“Improved transportation is vital to the continued success and progress of Fayette County,” said state Transportation Board member Sam Wellborn. “The completion of this project will serve as another important milepost on the road to our future.” Wellborn represents the 3rd congressional District, which includes Fayette County.

Estimated completion date for the Fayette projects is Jan. 31, 2001.

Others involved in selection of the projects for LARP funding include senators Rick Price and Greg Hecht, representatives Lynn Westmoreland and Kathy Cox, the Fayette County Commission and mayors and city council members in Peachtree City, Fayetteville and Tyrone.
