Church volunteers becoming experts at home building

The repetitive sound of hammers hitting their mark echoed throughout the Trinity Park subdivision in Riverdale this week as volunteers from Peachtree City United Methodist Church worked feverishly to build a 1,300-sq. ft. house in just seven days.

This is the third consecutive year the group has worked with the Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity to construct a home in the modest neighborhood. According to Habitat director John Bowen, this project closes out their section of Trinity Park. Future Habitat sites will be available in Stockbridge, where Holy Trinity Catholic Church plans to build a Habitat home on one of two available lots in September, and single lots in McDonough, Jonesboro and Forest Park.

Construction started on Saturday morning, under the direction of “blitz boss” Joe Runnals, with about 125 volunteers showing up to perform a variety of jobs from shouldering lumber and sawing two-by-fours, to keeping the water flowing for the hot and the sweaty bands of workers.

According to Barbara Hudson, Habitat liaison, the new home is being built for Wanda Early and her 8-year-old son, Cortez. In May, the Peachtree City United Methodist Women hosted a shower for Hudson where she received linens, kitchen utensils, dishes, silverware, cookware, small appliances, garden tools and bath accessories for her new place of residence.

Habitat for Humanity is a 22-year-old nonprofit Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing. Volunteers work side by side with future homeowners building houses and community partnerships. Habitat provides a way for low- to moderate-income families to own decent, affordable housing of their own.

Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity serves Fayette, Clayton and Henry counties. Its offices are in Jonesboro at 142 South Main St., phone 770-477-2367, e-mail ohio@mindspring.com.
