The Woolsey Baptist Church is in a community named for its first pastor, the Rev. Dr. I. G. Woolsey. He came to this middle Fayette County community in the late 1860s and the church was constituted in 1888. Members are now doing mission work totally unheard of in the 19th century they are heading to Kenya where they will stay for several weeks. There are eight adults, four high schoolers and two seminarians who will make the trip. Traveling by airplane from Atlanta to London to Nairobi, they will then travel by car to their destination. Organizing Vacation Bible School will be one of the visitors' projects, as will working with the missionaries stationed there. Taking along several copies of the video Jesus, they will show it to local congregations and make sure as many missionaries as possible have copies. The Rev. Chuck Chambers has been with the church for 12 years and has been charged with working and teaching other pastors there, especially in the subjects of the Holy Spirit, stewardship and prayer. The youth of the church are busy, too. One college student has just returned from Montana, having taught Vacation Bible School and worked in construction. A young couple will soon head for India, where they will spend several weeks working with churches. One high school student will soon travel to Mexico and another will head for New York, where he will be working at a basketball camp and teaching the young players about the Lord. What's in the future? Having completed a new sanctuary in 1996, Woolsey Baptist is now in need of educational space. Work is currently in process with an architect for a 13,000-sq. ft. educational building. It hopes to begin work in early 2001. AWANA is a children's outreach program conducted each Wednesday night at 6:30. It will begin again when school starts. Dual Sunday School and worship services are offered Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and again at 10:45 a.m. The church is at 115 Hampton Road, Woolsey and can be reached at 770-461-9618.
