County balks at Senoia's efforts to annex 967 acres

A proposed annexation by the city of Senoia could change the face of eastern Coweta County and extend the city's borders to the proposed Lake McIntosh.

Last week, city officials sent Coweta County a letter confirming a massive annexation of 967 acres from McIntosh Trail north to near the Fayette County border.

The property also contains the land for a proposed expansion of TDK Boulevard from Peachtree City to Coweta County.

In the letter, City Administrator Leonard Thompson said the tract was surveyed for Dan Stinchcomb, but did not specify a land use for the property.

After receiving the letter, County Administrator Theron Gay asked the county's planner, Robert Tolleson, to evaluate the proposal and see if it complied with House Bill 489.

In his evaluation, Tolleson said the notification did not follow the recently enacted rules because it did not provide a use for the property, nor say what the zoning would be.

The city also asked the county to respond within 5 days from the June 20 letter. But Tolleson said the county had 30 days to draft a response.

Tolleson concluded evaluation by saying it appeared the city was using the annexation procedure used before H.B. 489 and asked the county's attorney Mitch Powell to evaluate it.

County administrator Theron Gay said he expected to draft the county's initial response to the proposal by the end of the week.

City administrator Leonard Thompson did not return phone calls by press time to comment on the issue.
