Leach fire station could become memorial park

Leach Fire Station, the first city-owned building in Peachtree City, may soon be history itself.

But the property it's located on could become a park to honor the volunteer fire department, which is remembered by city officials as being a key to helping recruit industry to the town in its infant stages.

At its meeting last Thursday, council decided to study the idea of erecting a memorial to those volunteer firefighters, and possibly other public safety personnel.

Others had previously suggested the city sell the land to FC&A (Frank Cawood and Associates) so it could expand or to a commercial developer that could located a convenience store or fast food restaurant there.

The Leach station is almost obsolete now that a new fire station is almost complete just behind the building. Local resident Robert Brown suggested that when Leach station is torn down, the bricks could be saved to use in the memorial at the park.

The city might also solicit design proposals from the public, it was suggested.
